Timmins News: Police report increase in vehicle thefts from hotels and motels

The Timmins Police Department said Monday that thieves will go to “extreme” means to steal items from vehicles parked at local hotels and motels.

“Over the past three weeks, several vehicles in local hotel and motel parking lots have been broken into and numerous expensive items have been stolen,” police said in a news release.

“The suspects are persistent and will do their best to enter any unattended vehicle.”

Commercial vehicles are being broken into “with some regularity lately”, according to the statement.

“The suspects usually flee with tools and other items of this nature that are of significant value and importance,” police said.

“The Timmins Police Department encourages citizens and guests of the city to remove all valuables from your vehicles, especially items left visible through vehicle windows.”

Police said officers were working with the local hospitality industry ‘to encourage patrols through internal security, improved lighting in parking areas and the use of a CCTV camera system to inhibit this type of criminal activity”.

Anyone with information about the thefts is encouraged to report the matter to the Timmins police at 705-264-1201, or call the Crime Stoppers tip line at 1-800-222-8477 or by clicking here.
