Morning Brief: Childcare Billing Errors, Reassigned Motels, and Night Owls

Child care providers have been particularly affected by COVID-19.

Faced with intermittent closures, the loss of customers due to changing financial situations for families, and the fulfillment of sometimes costly security mandates, many child care centers and preschools that were already operating at low margins were pushed to the limit. edge of financial disaster.

Now some home child care providers in Los Angeles are facing another hurdle, reports my colleague Mariana Dale – in October, they were mistakenly sent invoices for fire permits, some for over $500. Most of those who paid the bills are still waiting for refunds.

For context, a 2017 report found that home child care providers in LA County earned an average of $11.73 per hour. That means a $500 bill could mean the difference between staying open and closing permanently.

Diana Mangioglu, director of the finance office and treasurer of the city of LA, said the invoices were sent in error in part due to staffing shortages caused by cutbacks caused by the pandemic.

“Something that might have taken us five minutes to fix, you know, now takes us maybe days to implement,” she said.

Yet many child care providers can’t wait. The city apparently only sends refunds to those who request them, and some vendors have reported receiving non-payment notices with additional fines.

“Everyone deserves a refund,” said supplier Estrella Mundy. “They can use that money for something else.”
