AMHERST — Hotel rooms in Amherst and Hadley will provide housing for the next 10 months for some homeless people.
With the closure of the two seasonal overnight shelters operated by Craig’s Doors: A Home Association, Inc., reserved hotel rooms will help the agency continue to fulfill its mission, including providing case management services, said Gerry Weiss, president of Craig’s Doors. plank.
The University Lodge at 345 North Pleasant St. in Amherst already offers 20 rooms, which can be used for single or double occupancy, while another 20 rooms will come online at the Knights Inn at 208 Russell St. in Hadley. Both will be used until March 31, 2023.
“We are extremely grateful to the owners of Knights Inn and University Motor Lodge for renting their motels to us for next year,” Weiss said.
Rental costs for both buildings come from funds provided by the Massachusetts Department of Housing and Community Development.
Weiss said the hotels will mean that at least 40 people, and up to 80 depending on how many can be doubled, can stay at the two sites. The Emergency Overnight Shelters are both closing for the season and will no longer be available until approximately November 1.
The Craig’s Place gathering site, located for the season at Immanuel Lutheran Church, 867 North Pleasant St., closed May 1, as it usually does, while the new Willie Eaton House gathering site at the Unitarian Meetinghouse, 121 North Pleasant St., is due to close May 15.
According to the plan, the Knights Inn will make 10 rooms available on May 15, coinciding with the closure of the Willie Eaton site, and another 10 rooms will be in use from June 1.
This is the second time Craig’s Doors has turned to a Hadley Hotel for space. In early 2021, the agency began using 19 rooms at the EconoLodge at 329 Russell St.
