Are there hostels in New England?
The hostels are mostly European, but we have them here in New England. I had never considered staying in a hostel in the US until I traveled to Europe and got a taste of backpacker life.
Now I look at hostels in the areas I travel to before I even think of a hotel.
What is a hostel?
Hostels are small, budget accommodations that cater to backpackers and solo travellers, especially overseas and in Europe. They offer bunk beds in shared rooms at extremely low prices with common areas.
Most places also offer private rooms for a more expensive option, but most of the time you will find people staying in dorms. It’s a really cool and fascinating way to meet people while traveling the world. You can stay in hostels for long periods of time, but they are mainly intended for short stays.
The best travel experiences I’ve ever had have been in hostels and I’ve met the best people from all over the world during my stays.
Why stay in a hostel?
There are countless reasons why you should choose hostels when traveling, but I will name just a few. When traveling alone or with a small pair or group, it’s so easy to meet new friends to explore places with, have a meal together, share stories and add to the cultural experience.
They are safe spaces that are very useful if you want ideas or suggestions on what to do in the area or where to visit next. Most importantly, it makes travel accessible to those who otherwise couldn’t afford it. I spent time in Venice, Italy for only $10 a night!!

I used to only look at hostels when planning a trip overseas, but now I look at local options even when I’m just traveling to a few states. I didn’t even know there were hostels in Maine, but we have a few!
In case you’re curious about hostel life or want an affordable option when traveling, I’ve compiled a list of some hostels in Maine, Massachusetts, and New Hampshire.
